Do it for the Children

Updated: Nov 17, 2023

Some say it isn’t the guns. It’s the mentally disturbed people that resort to gun violence. This is a ludicrous argument made to dupe the easily misled and disengaged voter. Every society has people with mental problems but those societies do not come close to the number of deaths by guns that we have in the United States. It’s all a game played by the N.R.A. and other gun lobby groups.

U.S. Scales of "Justice"?

I am 86 years old and attended a one room country school house. Guns were for shooting rabbits, pheasants, and deer. I got my first deer with a 20-gauge bolt action shotgun purchased at Montgomery Ward. Virtually no one at that time was looking for weapons of mass destruction such as assault weapons.

We were taught Civics in the 8th grade and were introduced to the U.S. Constitution and each morning had to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our U.S. Flag. It seems now the respect for our U.S. Constitution, our government and our flag has diminished, which is a sad commentary.

We have a very large part of the population that venerates the assault weapons to the tune of almost 20 million. These folks seem to have no objections over sacrificing our children at the altar of the gun lobby. The number one cause of children dying under 18 years of age is by guns. And the second reason is by suicide. These are disgraceful and shameful statistics. We have more guns than people in our country. We have over six hundred mass shootings in America a year. And it is safe to say with the addition of more guns we will have more mass shootings and more deaths by guns.

Then we have the Congress men and women who wear assault weapon pins on their lapels. They are paid to wear those pins. Sadly, these groups do not feel any guilt for 9-year old children in elementary schools being shot with assault weapons. Many of these children cannot even be identified after the shooting other than by DNA. This is barbaric and should not be tolerated. We have lost our souls when assault weapons become more important than our children. We are losing all sense of decency when we now must use “active shooter drills”, in schools instead of curing the problem. The actual cost of assault weapons being allowed in our society is staggering! Six hundred mass shooting crimes a year costs billions and billions of dollars to confront and solve. This is a pathetic waste of money when eliminating these weapons would be a simple solution.

From 1994 to 2004, assault style weapons were banned in the United States and mass shootings went down over 70%. Come on, let’s fight back to save lives. Let’s not lose our core values or give up on main stream thinking.

Australia and New Zealand had mass shootings and solved the problem with an assault weapon buyback. Did it work? Yes, it was nearly 100% successful. We can consider the same approach and simply ship those assault weapons to Ukraine to be used for their intended purpose, as weapons of war.

All Americans who cherish and love their children must object to the lack of any assault weapon control in America. “Active shooter drills” in elementary schools remain a disgrace. How can we put our children into a constant state of fear over guns?

Let’s stop the nonsense and demand change. We have a vast majority in America who want action. Our children deserve better!
